For each of the following, decide project or not, and name the criterion that decides it: the school’s yearly open day, fixing a printer, replacing the timetable software, weekly backups, writing your diploma thesis.
Solution
Open day — project (unique, dated, resourced), though a recurring one, so parts of it are routine. Printer — not a project, routine operation. Timetable software — project. Backups — not a project, continuous operation. Diploma thesis — project, and the one this course is preparing you for.
Rewrite a solution-shaped text as an initial situation

Rewrite this so it describes the problem and not the solution: "We build a web app where students can book lab slots, with a login and an admin panel."
Solution
For example: "Lab slots are handed out on a printed sheet outside the lab. The sheet is often full or out of date, students queue for slots that are already taken, and the lab supervisor cannot tell in advance how many people to expect." Nothing about login or admin panel — those are decisions, and decisions belong in the charter, not in the description of the problem.
